Carl Poul Petersen (1895 - 1977). He was an apprentice under Georg Jensen from 1908 - 1913, from whom he learned his exquisite silversmithing. Jensen's design elements are clearly visible in this piece with applied three dimensional applications around the edge of the dish. Petersen has a huge reputation in Canada and after settling in Montreal (1929), he opened his own studio after marrying Georg Jensen's daughter.
Sadie Bronfman, the matriarch of the Bronfman family (the onwers of Seagram) was a great admirer of Petersen and special ordered many pieces and sets from Petersen.
Carl Poul Petersen was born in Denmark in 1895 died in Montreal in 1977. He apprenticed with Georg Jensen between 1908 and 1913, and eventually became a Master Silversmith himself. He married Jensen's daughter, Inger, in 1922. Then they moved to Montreal, Canada in 1929 at the very start of the depression and was employed by Henry Birks & Son as their master goldsmith in 1932. Briefly independent (1937 to 1939) he returned to Birks in 1939. Five years later he left Birks, and started his own business, which remained in operation until 1975. He crafted jewellery, flatware, tea sets, serving pieces, bar sets, etc. They are all of very high quality, and are highly collectible.
The first exhibition ever devoted to this artist, was on view at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from February 13 to April 13, 2003. Carl Poul Petersen (1895-1977) brought his skills from Denmark to Montreal in 1929, where he pursued a successful career. The exhibition, which featured seventy works, and showed the range and quality of the work by this silversmith, who was at the centre of modern silver design in Canada for three decades.
The beauty of Petersen’s silverware rests in the quality of his workmanship, which is based on traditional techniques, and the simplicity and modernism of his forms highlighted with areas of naturalistic ornamentation. Petersen learned the mastery of this art through an apprenticeship with the renowned Danish silversmith Georg Jensen in his native Copenhagen. Upon his arrival in Montreal, Petersen worked for Birks and later opened his own studio. Petersen’s success was assured by the popularity of Scandinavian design in Canada during the 1950s and 1960s. From his studio in Montreal, Petersen shipped his silverware all over Canada and the United States.
Petersen created many pieces of tableware. At the time, tea and dessert services, plates, bar accessories, serving platters and chandeliers in solid silver were considered ideal wedding gifts. He was renowned for his commemorative pieces, especially the trophies he created for the National Hockey League, which included a replica of the original Stanley Cup.
