Original White Star Line Gilt Porcelain Plate

About the Item

A extremely desirable genuine ‘White Star Line’ porcelain plate. A fine example of ocean liner memorabilia, this is a rare museum quality piece and serious collectors item. Likely to have been used as a side plate or saucer for hot chocolate or buillon (beef tea). Most likely to be from deck service due to it’s heavyweight and 1st class due to the gilt. It is simple but very attractive, similar to the design of crockery seen in 2nd and 3rd class, but with a two-colored hand painted logo and a gold coated rim, a combination of decoration that would not have been found in these classes. This particular pattern is not often seen making it an extremely rare piece. It has a plain white body emblazoned with the company crest in the middle. In the centre of the front are the words ‘White Star Line’ within a ribbon glazed in brown surmounted in a red burgee (nautical emblem) bearing a white star. In a soft cream glaze, hand decorated on glaze in two colour red and brown with an exquisite golden band around the edge. There is a tiny spot of brown paint which has been accidentally blobbed on the white, this is not damage and would have been present in the firing process. In original condition with a trio of kiln support marks on the reverse, plus one gilt mark within the glaze on the reverse, and on the front one brown mark within the glaze. Undamaged accept with a later hairline crack on the outer rim, with no chips, loss or restoration. Probably produced by Spode and distributed by Stonier & Co (without pottery stamp) for use in several White Star ocean liners, the Olympic, Britannic and of course the ill fated Titanic. All ships by the company had the same distinctive crockery throughout and they were not unique to each ship. Although we cannot authenticate that it came from the Titanic, identical plates have been recovered from the famous ship. (The gentleman this item was acquired from's own personal collection is currently on display and loan to the Titanic Museum in Belfast). Color: Off-white, burgundy, maroon, red, antique gold.
