Vintage French 36pc Flatware Set, Dinner Size, Soup Ladle & Box

About the Item

Gorgeous vintage French hallmarked sterling silver 36pc dinner sized flatware set with beautiful festooned border pattern, bows & ribbons, ornate interlaced monograms and fitted storage or presentation box! Not quite antique, these date to the 1920-30s but have everything you could want in a great old French sterling flatware set! Elegant lines, thick & heavy silver so they're made to last and don't you just love those monograms! Same initials as the world renowned silversmith Emile Puiforcat but these marks are actually those of E. Prost (though the craftsmanship and detail here are as impressive as quite a few Puiforcat sets I've seen. Large matching serving ladle, just add a great old set of knives and enjoy!

Very good condition. Very minor surface scuffs, indicative of normal light use. One of the smaller teaspoons is missing, leaving only eleven but all other pieces are original and in great shape. The box is not original but in the same style and age as this set would have been found in. See pictures for measurements. Weight of silver: 82 troy oz.

WHAT ABOUT KNIVES?? A traditional wedding gift, these magnificent French sterling silver flatware sets were almost always packaged without knives. Why is this? Another French tradition has to do with the gift of knives or a knife as a symbol of the cutting or ending of a relationship. And no where on earth is tradition more important, perhaps, than to the French culture. So, in light of the symbolism of the gift, knives were not part of a wedding gift, not packaged or even usually made with the matching pattern of the forks, spoons in a set, and are something added later and as compliments to the table's sterling silver choice. And ever the center influence in fashion, this also opportuned the happy result of knives made in coordinating and complimenting fashion with handles of rich elegant mother of pearl, fine ivory, blond natural horn, or exotic hardwoods like ebony (a French Empire 'must') walnut, rosewood. The result is that you can add sets of knives to compliment and define your table setting.
