About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive vintage Elizabeth II English sterling silver ecclesiastical ciborium; an addition to our religious silverware collection. This exceptional vintage Elizabeth II sterling silver chalice / ciborium* has a circular rounded form onto a circular knopped pedestal foot. The surface of this vintage chalice / ciborium is plain and encircled with an applied moulded girdle border to the upper rim. This exceptional ciborium retains the original hallmarked sterling silver domed, push fit cover surmounted with an impressive cast cross pattée** shaped finial. The circular rounded knopped pedestal is encircled with bands of plain applied moulded decoration. The circular drinking vessel retains the original gilt interior. * A ciborium is a shrine style cup with a cover used to hold the Eucharist (otherwise known as Holy Communion, the Lord's Supper, Mass, Blessed Sacrament and Breaking of Bread). ** This variation of the cross pattée, with the ends of the arms convex and curved, is sometimes referred to as "Alisee" (French: croix pattée alésée arrondie). Condition This vintage sterling silver chalice is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The piece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the foot and part hallmarks to the surface of the cover's rim are all very clear.
