About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver and enamel card case; an addition to our range of silver boxes and cases. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver card case has a rectangular form with rounded corners. The anterior surface of this antique card case is embellished with a fine and impressive vibrant hot enamel illustration depicting a jockey on a horse, from the reverse perspective. The posterior surface and sides of this antique Victorian case are plain and unembellished. This sterling silver & enamel card case is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover and opens to reveal the original gilded interior. The rim of this antique card case bears the retailer's mark 'Thornhill, New Bond St, London', in addition to the full hallmarks. Condition This antique sterling silver & enamel card case is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The enamel scene is in perfect condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the rim are all very clear.     An exceptional, fine and impressive large antique Victorian English sterling silver christening mug; part of our silver christening collection This antique Victorian silver christening mug has a circular, subtly tapering rounded form onto a circular spreading foot. The body of the mug is embellished with exceptional embossed and chased decorated angel/putto* head designs, accented with wing motifs to the nadir. The body of this large mug is further ornamented with large ribbon bow motifs and floral festoons, encompassing the aforementioned portrait designs, all within an arabesque band and matte background. The decoration to the body incorporates a vacant shaped cartouche to the anterior. The lower portion of this Victorian silver christening mug is encompassed with a plain applied girdle, above further chased floral designs within a shaped-scalloped border. This mug is fitted with a cast silver angular handle with leaf decorated bifurcating terminals, in addition to impressive ribbon and leaf ornamentation to the upper portion of the handpiece. This exceptional example of Victorian silverware retains the original gilding.     Nathaniel Mills castle-top card case, depicting St Paul’s Cathedral London, in high relief. The card case is shaped in a rectangular form with the view surrounded by scroll, flowerhead and foliate decoration on a matted ground. The reverse is decorated in a similar fashion to the front, around a shaped cartouche engraved with "N.M'. St Paul's is not a view which is seen often on card cases, especially in high relief. Nathaniel Mills was the finest maker of this type of card case. Weight: 72.4g Nathaniel Mills: The founder of brand name, Nathaniel Mills, the elder registered the maker's mark at the Birmingham Assay Office in 1803 while being a partner in "Mills and Langston, Jewellers Northwood". In 1825, he registered his own mark "N.M" within the rectangle and started to produce silverware.
