Antique Edwardian English Sterling Silver Candlesticks
About the Item
A fine and impressive pair of antique Edwardian English sterling silver candlesticks with sporting interest; an addition to our diverse ornamental silverware collection.
These fine antique Edwardian sterling silver candlesticks have plain circular, octagonal paneled form onto an oval spreading base.
The cylindrical rounded capital of the antique silver candlesticks retain the original navette shaped detachable push fit sconces.
The tapering octagonal paneled column of each candlestick is embellished with impressive applied fluted ornamentation accented with a band of fluted floral designs to the centre.
The base is encompassed with further applied narrow fluted decoration in a graduated design.
The concave incurved channel of each base bears the contemporary bright cut engraved presentation inscription 'Eltham Ladies Mixed Foursomes, Won by Mrs & Mr A.C.Latter, June 1902, Presented by R. Whyte Esq'.
Both candlesticks have filled bases, as to be expected and are fitted with green baize to the underside.
Condition
These antique silver candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver for their type, excellent quality and in excellent condition. There is natural fire to the surface of each candlestick, in keeping with age. The applied decoration is all very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the rim of each base and part hallmarks to the sleeve of each sconce are all very clear.

These magnificent antique Georgian English sterling silver candlesticks have a plain subtly tapering columnar form. The large and impressive Corinthian capital of each candlestick retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconce ornamented with a plain moulded rim. The cylindrical columns are supported by a cuboid plinth to an impressive plain square stepped three tier base. Each plinth is embellished with a fine and impressive bright cut engraved coat of arms depicting the Head family coat of arms encircled with a belt accented with the family motto 'Study Quiet'. The bases retain the original contemporary engraved inscription 'A token of respect from Francis Head to her aunt Dame Mary Ann Head. 1803' to the lowest tier. Both candlesticks are fitted with turned mahogany bases to the underside. These magnificent Georgian candlesticks were crafted by George Eadon, George Kibbles & John Weaver of George Eadon & Co. The title ‘Dame’ was the traditional style for the wife of a baronet at this time and before although it was interchangeable with the title ‘Lady’.
