A rare circa 1890 sterling silver flatware set by Gorham and retailed by Shreve & Co., of San Francisco, CA.each place piece with a different 3-dimensional figural bust, some male and female with hand engraving, the stem superbly diecut in a swirl of rococo detail. The detail of each piece is very exact, the hair, turbans, facial features, beards of the men; the hair, facial features, collars and more of the women; and the cat animal head.

The pattern is Gorham's Florence pattern. It is listed in the costs books where July 1890 should be. The unusual 'engineering' of the handles is only paralleled by Roman spoons as seen in surviving pieces from Pompei for example. You can't hold these as with usual spoons and forks, but have to grip them the way we are taught not to do by the time we are three. (Mr. Hough has never seen the knives, nor heard of a set as extensive as this set.)

Mr. Hough believes the pattern was made during Gorham's move from the original site to Adelaide Avenue in Providence about four miles to the southwest in June/July 1890. It is listed (but poorly pictured as Charles Carpenter's pattern 167 where it is dated 1901.

Weightable silver 68oz. (excludes the knives with silverplate blades). The place pieces have excellent weight to each piece. No monogram. Marked as illustrated in photo below. (This set was originally gilded, some gilding remains; rather than regild, seller would suggest to remove the existing gilding if such gilding 'bothers' buyer. It is fine for seller.)
