Antique Sterling Silver Parcel Gilt Beaker / Shot Cup - Peter & Ann Bateman 1796

About the Item

We are delighted to offer this wonderful Georgian solid silver parcel gilt beaker made by the celebrated silversmiths Peter & Ann Bateman in London, 1796. The beaker is made with a very good gauge of silver; heavy and sturdy in the hand, it has a reassuring and high-quality feel upon usage. The exterior of the beaker has been finely embellished with a 'snake-skin' pattern in the manner of 17th-century German silver. In homage to such earlier and foreign wares, this beaker is also decorated with the same technique that would have been used in the 17th Century; a circular hollow-tip punch would be used to hammer each fine circle that is repeated until the entire surface is covered with a contrasting stippled design. One can imagine how much time and meticulous craftsmanship went into making even just this single beaker - whilst upon first glance such items are indeed beautiful as they are, upon acknowledging the human element and the hand that worked upon such items, a further admiration than what meets the eye can be appreciated. Furthermore, this beaker presents a central hand-chased cartouche with a crest in the middle with a parcel-gilt (partially gilt/plain silver) surface. The interior of the beaker continues with a fully gilt surface remaining in great condition which not only is aesthetically magnificent but prevents the silver from tarnishing with whatever content is held within. Due to its great condition, the beaker is leak free and can be used in a wide range of ways even in the modern day. Whilst it would make for an excellent piece of interior decor among other wares, it can also be used practically for your favorite spirits, espressos, or for even holding small sweets/items inside.
