Antique Sterling Silver Side-Handled Chocolate Pot
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian sterling silver side-handled chocolate pot; an addition to our continental teaware collection
This exceptional antique George II English sterling silver hot chocolate pot has a plain tapering cylindrical form with a subtly flared moulded base.
The plain body of this antique hot chocolate pot is embellished with an engraved coat of arms depicting a chevron between three ravens, surmounted with the crest of a raven.
This scrolling leaf bordered heraldic marking incorporates the motto 'Secret Et Hardi' - Secret and Bold*.
The upper rim and foot of this exceptional example of Georgian silverware are encircled with applied moulded borders.
This impressive example of antique teaware is fitted with a domed hinged hallmarked cover surmounted with a cast sterling silver knopped finial.
The chocolate pot is fitted with a scrolling carved wood side-handle with scrolling thumbpiece and fitted to sterling silver sockets.
The chocolate pot has an impressive cast swan necked spout with scrolling design to the underside, in addition to pensile drop design to the nadir of the socket.
* These heraldic markings pertain to the Rice/Rees/Rhys family name.
Condition
This antique sterling silver hot chocolate pot is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
The engraved heraldic markings are crisp.
Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the base and lion passant to the interior of the cover are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Georgian silverware.
