Antique Sterling Silver Vinaigrette
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique George III English sterling silver vinaigrette; an addition to our silver boxes collection
This antique Georgian silver vinaigrette, in sterling standard, has a plain rounded rectangular form.
The sides of the box and cover are embellished with bands of pin struck decoration.
Thehinged hallmarked sterling silver vinaigrette is ornamented with the engraved illustrative portrait of Horatio Nelson, encompassed with the contemporary engraved quote 'England expects every man will do his duty'*.
The anterior surface of the cover bears a plain thumbpiece and allows access to the hinged pierced decorated gilt grille.
The grille is further ornamented with the embossed design of a ship and the elucidating wording 'Victory, Trafalgar, Oct 21 1805'.
The underside of this rare case is embellished with an engraved floral rosette accented with paralleling pin struck decorated borders.
The interior of this Georgian silver vinaigrette and grille retains the original gilding.
Note: * 'England expects that every man will do his duty' was a signal sent by Vice-Admiral of the Royal Navy Horatio Nelson from his flagship HMS Victory. This was dispatched on 21st October 1805 at the commencement of the Battle of Trafalgar.
Condition
This antique George III silver vinaigrette is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
Full hallmarks struck to the interior of the vinaigrette and cover are all very clear.
Reflections in photographs may detract from this fine sterling silver vinaigrette.
