Christoffersen Modern Jewelry Sterling Bracelet Pin Earring International Silver
About the Item
An impressive and Modernist style mid 20th century era set of Kurt Eric Christoffersen designed sterling jewelry consisting of a silver bracelet, pin or brooch, pair of screw back dangle drop earrings. Each piece is fully signed. The design is at once linear and organic, most certainly non-objective in its sensibilities. The bracelet features rectangular panels inset with squares that further contain three quarter round sphere forms. The pin or brooch is an abstract diamond shaped form that contains three fully spherical forms. The pair of screw back dangle or drop earrings is of a similar form to the aforementioned pin or brooch. Each piece is fully signed. This incredibly beautiful suite of mid century modern jewelry is ready for your everyday use as well as special occasions. The bracelet measures 7.5" long, the brooch or pin measures 2.25" high by 1.88" wide, the pair of earrings each measure 1.88" long. The Danish American artist Kurt Eric Christoffersen, (1926-1981), trained at the firm of A. Michelsen in Copenhagen and later attended and graduated from the prestigious Academy of Arts and Crafts of Denmark. In 1949 he immigrated to the United States and during the 1950s worked in association with The International Silver Company designing jewelry pieces. The International Silver Company (1898 - 1983) was formed in Meridien, Connecticut as a corporation banding together many existing silver companies. Over the years, several designers made Modernist designs for the International Silver Company that are now in museum collections. These designers include Edward S. Buchko, Edward J. Conroy, Kurt Eric Christoffersen (whose work is on offer in this listing), Robert L. Doerfler, Lurelle Guild, Virginia Hamill, Lilian V. M. Helander, Garth Huxtable, Robert J. King, Alfred G. Kintz, Alphonse La Paglia, Paul Lobel, Eliel Saarinen, Curtis Rittberg, Frederick W. Stark, Jean Theobald, and Stuart A. Young.

Ah! So that must be why Spratling called this design 'Feather of Quetzalcoatl! But hang on there, how did Spratling come to learn about Quetzalcoatl? Well according to the website Elisa Rolle, "When lecturing at the National University of Mexico's Summer School in 1926-1928, Spratling quickly integrated himself into the Mexican art scene and became a friend and a strong proponent of the work of muralist Diego Rivera, for whom he organized an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Using money received from commissions he organized for Rivera, Spratling bought a home in Taxco, Mexico in 1928, where he began work on a book, Little Mexico, about this small mountain town.
