Early 20C Pair of Sterling Silver Columbia Weighted Candlesticks

About the Item

PRESENTING a LOVELY Early 20C Pair of Sterling Silver Columbia Weighted Candlesticks. Matching pair of 4.5 inch tall candleholders, with fluted baluster central column, on a circular base with repousse edges. Made by the ‘Columbia’ Silver makers in Brooklyn, NY circa 1910. In the Edwardian Style. Little is known about the “Columbia Silver Co” in NY, but from research, it appears that they started making sterling silver pieces from the very beginning of the 20C (circa 1900) until closing in 1994, due to the death of the last of 3 brothers, who was the last line of silversmith in the family. Often confused with the ‘Columbia Silver Company’ that was based in Chicago in the 19th Century, but made silver plated items and not sterling items. 'Weighted silver' refers to a construction technique rather than the silver itself. The silver used in a weighted piece is the same as in any other. No “extra’s have been added to the metal. So what is different about weighted silver? Weighted means there is a solid core being used to reinforce the piece. Typically hollowware pieces are weighted. Bowls and compotes have weighted bases. Taller pieces like candlesticks are weighted throughout. The substance used is either wax or cement and sometimes there is a metal reinforcing bar as well. Provenance: From a Dallas Private Collection. Dimensions: Each has a Diameter of 3.5 inches (at base) and 4.5 inches tall Condition: Good condition for age. Some very minor indentations to center column where it meets the base on one, but not significant. Very minor indentation to rim of one but, again, not significant.
