English sterling silver cup from 1760 in Georgian style by a London-based silversmith. It comes from the collection of W. Allston Flagg. It measures 4'' in diameter by 2 1/2'' in height, weighs 4.9 ozt, and bears hallmarks as shown. According to his 1971 obituary from the New York Times, "W. Allston Flagg, an investment banker and former governor of the New York Stock Exchange, was a collateral descendant, and namesake of Washington Allston, the early 19th-century American painter. His studies at Harvard were interrupted by Navy service in World War I as a submarine chaser commander. He returned to active duty as a lieutenant commander in World War II. Mr. Flagg succeeded his father, Washington A. Flagg, as a partner in the brokerage firm of Post & Flagg and continued as a partner in Harris, Upham & Co. after their merger.
