About the Item

Japanese Shakudo button. Made circa 1870's X-Ray tested positive for different alloys of metals. Cuprum, Silver, Gold, Germanium. Dimensions: Overall Condition: This antique button is in good condition overall. Shakudō is a traditional Japanese alloy primarily composed of copper and gold, often with a small percentage of other metals such as silver or iron. This alloy has been used for centuries in Japan for various decorative purposes, including the creation of buttons. The history of Shakudō silver buttons dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan. During this time, Shakudō was highly prized for its deep, lustrous black colour, which was achieved through a process of patination involving the use of a natural lacquer called rokushō. Shakudō buttons became popular adornments on traditional Japanese garments such as kimonos and other ceremonial attire. These buttons were not only valued for their aesthetic appeal but also for their symbolism and cultural significance. They often featured intricate designs inspired by nature, mythology, or traditional Japanese motifs, reflecting the rich artistic heritage of the period. Over time, Shakudō silver buttons evolved from being purely functional to becoming coveted collectibles and sought-after items among enthusiasts and collectors of Japanese art and craftsmanship. Today, antique Shakudō buttons are prized for their historical significance, exquisite craftsmanship, and unique beauty, serving as tangible reminders of Japan's rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions.
