Kashmiri 92% Silver Wine Vessel and glass, Mid-19th century. The great Mughal Empire, in its opulence, grandeur and glory has been a subject of fascination and intrigue for historians, collectors and commoners alike. Their unique styles and eye for art and culture has been documented and emulated since the time for their rise. The Mughals, in comparison to any other Islamic dynasty, made their adoration of their aesthetic principles and art a focal part of their identity. The second Mughal emperor, Humayun (1508-56) claimed that artists and artisans "were the delight of all of the world" and had decoyed several Persian artisans to his court from Persia and Central Asia. Both their intricate taste and power of patronage is clearly visible when uncovering their possessions at the time of their rule. Three centuries of Mughal reign left behind an enduring legacy of culinary art that has since altered the landscape of fine dining. They were lavish and extravagant, and supreme connoisseurs of beauty. Under their rule, cuisine along with cutlery was presented in art form. Dinners took place on the ground atop rich carpets which were laid with protective white sheets. The Mughal emperors impressed nobles, dignitaries, foreign guests and courtiers at their dining table with their regal banquets, but moreover their everyday meals would not be less than grand either. In all their grandeur and choice of ornaments for use through this culture of fine-dining, the tradition of using silver was considered a status symbol. Kashmiri silver of the Raj period developed in the 19th century and draws influence from Persian, Mughal and European decorative arts. The Kashmiri style is distinctive and recognizable and can be distinguished by its chased arabesques, mosaic backgrounds and decorative designs derived from the local flora. Patterns drawn from the Chinar leaf, Coriander leaf and poppy plant form a background to the arabesque and mosaic line-work. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Kashmiri silversmiths produced their work for European visitors.
