MARTELE CODMAN STERLING SILVER ART NOUVEAU CENTERPIECE
About the Item
Collectors of Gorham's Martele silver, will instantly recognize the name Codman. William Christmas Codman was Gorham's chief designer and with Edward Holbrook was responsible for the production of Gorham's Marele line. One of Codman's sons Edwin Everett was a modeler for Gorham beginning 1892. Edwin, together with his brother Frank, entered business together to manufacture hand wrought silver as Codman & Codman about 1904. Pieces of their works are exceedingly rare. The work has a strong resemblance in design, decoration and hand wrought manufacturing to the Gorham Martele, Art Nouveau designs produced by their father, William Christmas Codman, for Gorham, at that very time. This is not surprising because the sons lived with their father, William Christmas Codman, at the time frame of the dates of Codman & Codman business/operation.
A sterling silver celery dish by Codman & Codman is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design.
Please see March/April 1998 issue of Silver Magazine, pages 18-20, article by Samuel J. Hough entitled 'Codman & Codman, Once More'.
