A vintage Georg Jensen Old Danish sterling silverware service for 12 persons. The Old Danish design was designed by Harald Nielsen in 1947, called “Dobbeltriflet” in Danish, Dobbeltriflet is often said to be Denmark’s national silverware pattern. This set includes: 12 Dinner forks, 12 Dinner knives, short handle version stainless steel blades, 12 Oval soup spoons, 12 Salad/luncheon forks, 12 Luncheon knives short handle version stainless steel blades, 12 Pastry forks, 12 Coffee spoons.     Georg Jensen sterling silver flatware set in Old Danish pattern, in an elegant, Mid-Century Modern style, consisting of: - a two-tine fork measuring 6 3/4'' in length - a sauce ladle measuring 7 1/2'' in length - a 2-piece salad server consisting of a fork and a spoon measuring 9'' in length - 7 dinner forks measuring 7 3/4'' in length - 7 salad forks measuring 7'' in length - 8 dinner knives measuring 8 7/8'' in length - 7 fruit children's knives measuring 6 5/8'' in length - 8 demitasse spoons measuring 4 1/4'' in length - 2 grapefruit spoons measuring 5 7/8'' in length - 8 teaspoons measuring 5 3/4'' in length - 14 dessert spoons, 6 measuring 6 1/8'' in length and 8 measuring 6 3/4'' in length Total approximate silver weight including 1 ozt per knife is 90 troy ounces. Each piece bears hallmarks as shown. Danish silversmith Georg Jensen (1866-1935) set up his own silver business in 1904 in Copenhagen. Jensen's training in metalsmithing -- along with his education in the fine arts -- allowed him to combine the two disciplines and revive the tradition of the artist craftsman. Soon, the beauty and quality of his creations caught the eye of the public and his success was assured. In 1912, expansion of his studio began in earnest. By 1917, he had built a workshop brimming with hundreds of employees. Jensen was awarded the Grand Prix at the world exhibition in Paris in 1925 and again in Barcelona in 1929. The sale of Jensen silver went really well and in the early 1930s there were Jensen shops in Paris, London, Berlin, Brussels, Geneva, Barcelona, Stockholm, St. Thomas, Buenos Aires and New York apart from the ones in Denmark. By his death in 1935, Georg Jensen was an international house of design where inspired artisans carried on a tradition of blending expert craftsmanship with forward-thinking design. In his obituary the New York Herald Tribune called him “the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years.” Designed in 1947 by Harald Nielsen, the Old Danish pattern is a symbolic representation of Denmark’s occupation during World War II. The accentuated, clean lines of the double fluted pattern and the balanced distribution of weight symbolizes the spirit and proud resistance of the Danish nation.
