George III Egg Coddler Made in London by Silversmith Robert Garrard, 1807
About the Item
An important & very rare George III Egg Coddler made in London in 1807 by the Royal Silversmith Robert Garrard.
Only a handful of Georgian Egg Coddlers are known to exist and this example is of the finest quality, being made by this superior Royal silversmith. The Coddler is of a circular form, with a baluster body displaying a protruding girdle around the centre. Both the foot and rim are decorated with gadrooning and each side displays a beautifully detailed lion mask with carrying ring suspended from its mouth. Both the main body and the double hinged cover are engraved with a band of Greek Key decoration. The covers can be opened by two side thumb pieces and reveal a removable plain frame with four pierced egg cradles and central carrying handle. Both the coddler and frame are engraved with a set of entwined initials, with the Coronet of an Earl above. This extraordinary piece is in most excellent condition and is fully marked on the base, on the frame and with the sterling mark and date letter on the underside of each of the covers. As you will appreciate, the eggs would be placed in the frame and then positioned in the boiling water bath below to gently cook, with the covers closed. This is the first coddler we have offered over the years and, as we intimate, very few are known to exist from this early date.
