    A fine and impressive set of six antique George V English sterling silver menu / card holders - boxed; an addition to our diverse dining silverware collection. These fine antique George V sterling silver menu card holders have circular shaped bases. Each piece is surmounted with an impressive wishbone* shaped design with a paralleling shaped support. The subtly convex bases are encircled with an elevated scalloped border. The weighted bases of these impressive menu holders are fitted with green baize to the underside. This impressive set of antique silver menu card holders is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with two hinged catches. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Robert Stewart (Jewellers) Ltd, 75 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow'. A wishbone, otherwise known as the furcular, is a forked bone found in birds and some dinosaurs. The main function of the bone is to provide strength between the neck and breast, to protect the creature during battle. The Ancient Romans perceived this bone as a symbol of luck which allowed the progression of breaking a dried chicken wishbone apart whilst making a wish; this procedure determined the person with the bigger half would receive their wish or have good fortune. These exceptional antique Edwardian sterling silver menu holders have been realistically modelled in the form of gamebirds, on plain circular bases. The species of birds include: grouse, a snipe, a pheasant and a partridge. Each cast silver bird is embellished with details reproducing the plumage and anatomical features. The birds are further embellished with impressive gem set eyes. These exceptional examples of antique silver are fitted with plain angular supports to the posterior surfaces. Each model surmounds a plain circular plateaued base. This impressive set of antique silver menu holders is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with a push fit catch.
