Chinese Export Famille Rose Porcelain Meissen-style Tureen and Cover

About the Item

Chinese Export Famille Rose Circular Porcelain Tureen and Cover Painted with Cranes & Harbor Scene, Circa 1745 The Chinese Export Famille Rose porcelain circular small tureen and cover is painted in a Meissen-style to front and back with a group of cranes and other exotic birds to one side and a castle to the right with a large tree nearby and sailing ships in the background. The green enamel handles with leaf terminals in green and blue enamel. The conforming domed cover with a large bud finial and two rococo style famille rose flower bands. There was a small minor chip to the rim of the cover on the reverse now invisibly repaired. The design is a copy of the Meissen porcelain with harbor scenes from the early 1740s. Dimensions: 6 1/4 inches high x 8 1/2-inch diameter. (15.85cm high x 21.59cm diameter). Reference: The Galerie Nicholas Fournery sold a related tureen with the same design but a different shape. The following is from their description- For a tureen with this pattern, see Christie’s London, 22 April 1991, lot 80. For another tureen, see Christie’s London, 2 July 2013, lot 349. For a part of service including a tureen, see Sotheby’s New York, Property from the collections of Lily & Edmond J. Safra, 18 October 2011, lot 705. For a dish in Washington DC, see Thomas V. Litzenburg, Chinese Export Porcelain in the Reeves Collection at Washington and Lee University, 2006, cat. 39. The exotic bird featured in the central decoration is probably copying those that appeared circa 1740 on Meissen porcelain…. Although the vista in the background might represent a partial seaward view of the harbor at Batavia, it more likely copies one of the many harbor scenes found on Meissen porcelain.
