Delheid Frères (1828-1980). This beautiful and modernistic set consisting of two tureens (vegetable and/or soup), sauce boat and two serving dishes. Silver 800/1000. Brussels 1925, Art Deco. - Soup tureen : H : 14 cm – 29 cm x 24,5 cm W : 1.736 gr. - Tureen: H: 11 cm – 26 cm x 21 cm – W: 1.014 gr. - Sauce boat: H: 7 cm – 25,5 cm x 16 cm – W: 744 gr - Serving dish (2): Delheid/Massaux H: 4 cm – 16 cm x 17,5 cm W: 220 gr & 226 gr. Together with Wolfers Frères the Brussels-based house Delheid Frères, founded in 1828 by Michel Delheid, was one of the biggest silver manufacturers of Belgium. Unfortunately the company’s activities were discontinued in 1980 and the company was integrated into the Wiskemann limited liability company. At the outset, these manufacturers had an important production of domestic silverware in all sorts of neo-styles, but their major breakthrough came in 1930, when they acquired international recognition with their art deco production. It was the 1925 Paris exhibition that gave rise to the Belgian art deco silversmith trade, and the Belgian silversmiths undoubtedly had a particular respect for French art deco designers such as Jean E. Puiforcat or the creations of the Jean Tétard house. Nonetheless we may subdivide the general concept of ‘art deco’ into two major groups. The first stylistic group is called the “classic art deco style” and to this group belong silversmiths that were inspired by the French art deco style dating from just before the first world war. It is a historical style that is mainly insprired by traditional French decoration and adds to it a modern manner of designing. This style is characteristic of i.a. the ‘Wolfers Frères’ house. The second group practises a ‘modernistic style’ which is inspired by the modernistic ideas developed by people like Le Corbusier in France and the Bauhaus in Germany. This modernism is revealed in a preference for the undecorated ‘naked’ silver, whilst the objects are mostly designed squarely and as plainly as possible. These kinds of objects are particularly to be found in the production of Delheid Frères. The customers thought this ‘modernistic’ style too modern and many people decided that this silver was simply unattractive and ‘cheap’ because of its plain design and the absence of any tangible decoration. That is why only few objects are to be found in this style. King Leopold III clearly placed numerous orders for modern silver with “Delheid” for official-type gifts. We know of examples with his crowned monogram L and with the crowned monogram denoting his marriage to Queen Astrid. For Emperor Haile Selassie I, King of Kings of Ethiopia, Delheid made a sceptre and globe for his coronation in 1930, as well as silverware for his imperial household.
