Byzantine Rosettes Bowl

About the Item

The object comes with an international certificate of authenticity. The well sized finely worked bowl was used as a food or ceremonial (in church service?) bowl during the mid till end of the first millennium AD. It was created on a potter's wheel and then hand decorated with filigree Rosettes in high relief. The Rosettes have a very deep meaning in Christian context indicated that the decor was not chosen by random. One of the most basic and common ancient icons is the six-leaf rosette. Many consider it an popular Jewish or early Christian artwork because it appears in numerous mosaics, carvings, and lintels. Contrary to popular belief it is not just an artwork - it is an icon. The six-leaf rosette is an iconic symbol denoting great significance. The six-leaf rosette is the icon of the House of David. David was the greatest king in Israel’s history. Luke 2:4 calls Bethlehem where Christ was born “the City of David.” Why? Because David lived in the community of Bethlehem. Jesus was born in the same city indicating his 'noble decent in the line of King David'. (Micah 4:8-5:2). Thus, the lovely shaped bowl with its subtle decor is an more than thousand years old enduring symbol of Christianity and Jesus Christ. The bowl comes from Ravenna, Italy. During this time Ravenna was one of the most important Byzantine cities with bishops' residences and center of many of the most beautiful churches in the Europe. Considering the potting style and used terracotta, it is very possible that the bowl was brought from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The vessel is in excellent condition without any damages.
