About the Item
Late 19th Century Folk Art Bumbass instrument
A rare example of a late 19th Century folk art Bumbass instrument form, we have only ever uncovered one other example in the past 10 years, which was sold to an American music museum. This example comes with its original pine strumming stick, which is also rare. A grinning clown with glass eyes positioned at the grab section, several brass bells around its chime top, and a stretched pig skin drum at its centre with beat string. An Identical example is currently housed in The MET Museum New York. A great piece of musical history, and one for the serious musical folk art collector.
Size in inches approx.: H 70” x W 10” x D 8”
Origin: America or Germany
Date: 1890 - 1920
Material: Mixed
This item is over 100 years old and shows loss in detail through wear and tear. The item is worn and faded in areas, one side of the drum is damaged and has come away from the rim (this can be repaired) but not visible when displayed. A few brass bells are missing, and the clowns has light cracks and painted loss. WE have tried to show the condition / wear in all the phots provided buts hard to capture everything. We strongly suggest reviewing all the photos provided as part of this advert and propose questions where sections are unclear to avoid disappointment upon purchase.
For multiple years we have sold antique items globally, please expect our items to show relevant age and natural wear, Items are only restored due to breaks and major loss, and we always stipulate this in our condition report.
