Mid-Century Modern Ceramic Cross with Abstract Motif

About the Item

This captivating mid-century modern ceramic cross is a fine example of the era's innovative approach to traditional religious symbolism. Crafted by European studio artists, the cross is distinguished by its bold, abstract central motif, executed in a vivid orange-red glaze that evokes the imagery of flames or a dove in flight, symbols often associated with the Holy Spirit in Christian iconography. The background glaze, a deep azure blue, provides a striking contrast that enhances the dynamism of the central figure. This color choice is reminiscent of the period's fascination with bold, expressive colors and may also symbolize the heavens or water, elements that carry deep spiritual significance. The cross's form is soft and rounded, eschewing sharp angles for a more organic feel, which was a common stylistic choice in mid-century design. The combination of form and color in this piece reflects the era's interest in abstract expressionism, where color and shape were used to evoke emotion and transcend traditional representational forms. As an artifact of devotion, this cross offers a unique perspective on spiritual art, inviting the viewer to engage with its symbolism on a personal level. As a piece of studio pottery, it stands as an emblem of the craftsmanship and artistic expression that characterized European ceramics during the mid-20th century. Our European cross collection (Tradition & Modernism) is composed of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces made by Studio Pottery artists from the 1950s to 1970s. They show a range of diverse styles, from modernism to brutalism. Each artist has taken a unique approach to depict faith through the language of art and the medium of ceramics. Through this collection, artists merge artistic expression with traditional religious iconography, blending established symbols, motifs, and narratives with contemporary artistic styles. This thoughtful and deliberate endeavor demands both artistic skill and a profound understanding of the cultural and spiritual significance of the subject matter. Through this synthesis, artists create works that reflect their individual creativity while honoring centuries-old traditions of religious imagery. The resulting artworks resonate with both aesthetic and spiritual significance, offering viewers a seamless integration of artistic and religious elements.

  • Stan Bitters Signed Large Mid-Century Modern Ceramic Pottery Haniwa Sculpture
    By Stan Bitters
    Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderful, unique, beautifully glazed, quite rare, and special double-faced "Haniwa" pottery sculpture by American California studio pottery master ceramists Stan Bitters whose work was instrumental in shaping the organic modernist movement in the 1960s. Bitters received his Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1958. He also studied under Peter Voulkos at Otis College. After graduating, he worked for Hans Sumpf as the company's resident artist. During this time he created architectural murals, tiles, birdhouses, planters, and sculptural objects – designs that would earn him recognition later on as a pioneer of the organic modernist craft movement - many still some of the most iconic designs today. Stan Bitters' work was featured as a part of the prestigious California Design series of exhibitions and annuals that chronicled art and design in California from 1954-1976. His works were also featured as part of a group show entitled Golden State of Craft 1960-1985 at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, CA. This show was part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, an unprecedented collaboration of more than 60 museums and other cultural institutions in Southern California, celebrating the birth of the Los Angeles art scene. Bitters' work was also exhibited at Heath Ceramics' Boiler Room...
