Petite Pre-Columbian Striped Chupícuaro Vessel

About

This petite ceramic vessel was made by an artisan of the Chupícuaro culture, which was settled in Guanajuanto, Mexico from 500 BC-300 AD. Exhibiting a rich patina, the bowl's surface is painted in a striped pattern with slips of buff and red clay. Hand-formed using a coil method, the vessel nonetheless has a balanced symmetry, with a rounded form that tapered at the mouth. Although the precise date of the piece is unknown, this petite vessel remains an exquisite example of Pre-Columbian artistry.
