Polia Pillin Signed Mid-Century Modern California Studio Pottery Yunomi Tea Cup

About the Item

A wonderful, whimsical diminutive Yunomi tea cup by famed Polish-American master potter/artist Polia Pillin featuring a deep, rich cobalt blue glaze with streaks of green swirling around the cup body and hand painted female portrait figure. Polia was born in Czestochowa, Poland, in 1909. She immigrated to the United States in 1924. In 1927, she met and married Ukrainian immigrant William Pillin. The two eventually settled in Los Angeles, California in 1946 where they would work together for many years at their home studio (Pillin Art Pottery Company). Polia is most well known for her use of engobe and glaze techniques to create mid-century motifs painted onto hand-thrown pottery such as pots, vases, plates, bowls, etc., with the majority of subjects involving women, horses, cats, fishes, and other animals influenced greatly by her Eastern European heritage. Pillin won numerous awards from Los Angeles County Art Institute in 1949, the Syracuse Museum of fine Art in 1950, and the California State Fair in 1951. Her works can be found in numerous collections and museums including the Dallas Museum of fine Art and the Syracuse Museum of fine Art. This cup along with another we are listing are the smallest works of hers we have seen. Gorgeous, unique, and quite spectacular. The cup is signed on the base with her customary "Pillin." Would be a great addition to any collectors of her work or Mid-Century Modern pottery or an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in any setting. Dimensions: 2.25" High, 2.6" Diameter.

A fantastic, freeform, large, heavy plate/ charger by American master potter Peter Voulkos who is known for his abstract expressionist ceramic pottery pieces and sculptures. This was made during one of his most magical and experimental phases. From of Private Collection, New York. Voulkos is widely considered to be the most important and impactful ceramist of the modern era. • Robert Maxwell Signed Large Mid-Century Modern California Studio Pottery Charger
    By Robert Maxwell
    Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully made and beautifully designed Mid-Century Modern pottery charger by famed California potter and sculptor Robert Maxwell. Maxwell co-founded Earthgender pottery with fellow potter David Cressey. This charger/platter was made at his Venice beach, California Pottery studio in the early 1960s as verified by his wife. It is a very rare piece in respect to design, pattern, and sheer Size/heft (it is a very heavy work). We have not seen another quite like it. Apparently, he only made a few with some filled with melted glass to create the design/pattern. Signed by Maxwell on the base. Would clearly be a great addition to any mid-century pottery/ceramics collection...
