Japanese Kagura Dance Mask of Sarutahiko by Kiyomi Yokota, Late 20th Century
About the Item
A bold and powerful kagura mask of the Shinto deity Sarutahiko Okami by Kiyomi Yokota, Showa or Heisei Era, late 20th century, Japan.
The mask depicts the Japanese Shinto deity Sarutahiko Okami, the Shinto deity of martial arts, and leader of the earthly kami (spirits). Suratahiko is considered both a martial figure representing strength, as well as a leader figure, representing guidance. This mask would have been used in Shinto kagura dances, where myths and folktales are acted out, and sometimes deities invoked.
Sarutahiko is depicted in his typical form, with a bright red face, and long nose. He has a large bushy beard, wild mustache, and expressive eyebrows, all of goat hair. His bulging eyes and flat teeth highlighted in gilt.
The popular Japanese supernatural creature known as Tengu are based on Sarutahiko, with masks and images of Sarutahiko often being confused for that of a Tengu. This mask can be identified as Sarutahiko based on the inscription to the reverse of the mask.
The mask bears a carved signature reading "Kiyomi", for the celebrated mask maker Kiyomi Yokota.

A fine and elegant Japanese Satsuma tripod incense burner, koro, with pierced metal lid, signed Eizan (?) Meiji Period, late 19th century, Japan.
The koro, or censer, features a stoneware body of slightly compressed globular form, supported on three short and squat legs. The wide mouth with a recessed metal rim, and topped by an openwork metal lid topped with overlapping chrysanthemum blossoms of silver repousse.
The body of the koro finely painted with fan shaped cartouches. The fans in the foreground with sprays of blossoming chrysanthemum. The fans in the background with intricate geometric brocade designs.
