Extraordinarily Theodore Roosevelt Textile From 1900
About the Item
This extraordinary textile, printed on heavy weight cotton, was produced for the 1900 presidential campaign of William F. McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt was the Vice Presidential candidate and Governor of New York State. Made by “American Lithographic Company” in New York City, this may be the most colorful and graphic item that exists for the former Rough Rider, future Vice President and President, in the field of political campaign cloth. Flags drape like curtains on a stage around what is unquestionably the best portrait image that exists of T.R. on a campaign textile.
Matching textiles are known for both McKinley and for his Democrat opponent, William Jenning Bryan, but it is interesting to note that according to both books on political campaign items and conversations with long-time collectors, none seem to have survived for Bryan’s Vice presidential running mate, Adlai Stevenson.
It is also interesting to note that the Roosevelt and McKinley portraits, while certainly made to go together, have distinctly independent poses. McKinley faces stage left in a side profile and Roosevelt in a three-quarter forward position, facing stage right. William Jennings Bryan shares the same three-quarter pose as Roosevelt, while the Stevenson example—if produced at all—remains unrecorded and unknown.
Note the strong colors present in the printing and how unusual and realistic the image is when compared to printed cotton and silk kerchiefs of the same general period. This is because the textile, while it could be framed or simply tacked to a wall and hung for patriotic and political display, was essentially made so that it could be sewn into a pillow. This is the reason behind the use of sailcloth-like, upholstery weight cotton.
Numerous other designs exist from the same era that illustrate completely different images, such as western scenes, Native Americans, Lady Columbia, and the fabled image painted by Emanuel Leutze of Washington Crossing the Delaware. Of further interest to political collectors is a similar Teddy Roosevelt textile that was produced by Campbell, Metzger, and Jacobsen in New York, which celebrated his acceptance of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1905 after he brokered a treaty to end the Russo-Japanese War.
The 1900 vice presidential T.R. textile in question here is documented on page 335 of “Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth, 1775 to the Present” by Herbert Ridgeway Collins. Collins served as curator of political history at the Smithsonian and his book is considered the “Bible” of political textiles.
Mounting: The textile was hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton, black in color, which has been washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was then placed in a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding. The front is U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: There is an area with minor discoloration at the right side of the portrait and there are minor stains in the background. There is minor soiling throughout, but there is remarkably little fading. The overall condition is excellent for the object and the period, especially when considering its rarity.

- 1912 Roosevelt Turkey Red Bandana, ca 1912Located in York County, PATurkey red bandanna, made for the 1912 presidential campaign of teddy Roosevelt, when he ran on the independent, progressive party (bull moose) ticket Printed cotton kerchief, made for the 1912 presidential campaign of Theodore Roosevelt when he ran on the Progressive Party ticket (a.k.a., the Bull Moose campaign). This graphic textile, in a classic, western style, typical of the iconic red bandanna, is indicative of both the Republican Party in the late 19th century, and T.R.’s love of the American West. In this example, a geometric design with diamonds, surrounded by multiple, linear borders, is accompanied by the following text along the top and bottom that reads: “The Roosevelt Bandanna” and “Progressive Party,” respectively. A maker’s mark in the lower right corner reads “Cochranes Mfg. Co.” Cochrane’s was known for their long-lasting, red dye process, called “Cochrane’s Turkey Red.”. It was really a process, as opposed to a dye itself, to which the name applied. The dye was actually a derived from a synthetic colorant called “alizarin,” imported by Alexander Cochrane’s family, who emigrated to the United States from 1847, and owned a chemical company in Massachusetts that produced the dye. The fabrics were produced by the family of John Cochrane, who emigrated from Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1844. Both families, who resided in Malden, Massachusetts initially, traced their ancestry to Barrhead, Scotland, in the heart of the textile-producing region, near Glasgow and Paisley. It was in Glascow that Turkey Red printed bandannas are said to have originated, in the shop of Henry Monteith & Company, in 1802.* TR's decision to enter the 1912 election was not exactly popular among many of his friends and former supporters. His participation manifested into a unique political incident, in which the independent, Roosevelt, beat out a major party ticket, garnering 27.4% of the vote. At the same time, however, he lost the White House, not only for himself, but for his former Republican friends as well, by dividing support between his own candidacy and that of incumbent President William Howard Taft...Category
