Antique Folk Art Carved Gesso over Wood and Hand Painted Native Man Statue

About the Item

Presumed to date from the late 19th century, this life-sized Folk Art carved and hand painted study depicts a Native man dressed in traditional attire and holding a staff. The artist is unknown and this sculpture is unsigned and done in a very realistic style. The carving, likely done in Cyprus wood as it was acquired in Florida, is possibly a single piece that makes up the main body section, although difficult to ascertain with any certainty given that some areas appear to be covered with a gesso or plaster, prior to being painted.
