Rare, Mammoth Fetish Bowl by Marvelita Phillips, One of Only Four Ever Made
About the Item
Fetish Bowl
1998
Marvelita Phillips ( 1949 - )
Ceramic pot, pine tar, turquoise, azurite, shells, coral, deer antlers, feathers, jet, horsehair, deer sinew, leather.
A truly magnificent Fetish Bowl appearing in near pristine original condition and one of only four examples extant of these largest Fetish Bowls ever made by Marvelita Phillips.
The bowl is coated with a pine tar mixture of a proprietary mixture of turquoise, azurite, and coral that stuck to the fetish bowl. This is meant to give the fetishes great importance and value.
There are three very large carved shed deer antler Water Serpent fetishes and four carved deer antler Wolf fetishes. The carved deer antler fetishes are all strung with deer sinew and leather to insure the fetish spirits are strong. The fetish bowl has a hole in it through which spirits can enter and leave.
Each of the deer anther fetishes is feather bundled. The Water Serpent fetishes are sinew strung with shells and horsehair. The Wolf fetishes are also sinew strung with shells and carry a jet arrowhead.
The three Water Serpent fetishes are substantial in size; the largest measuring 11 inches in length with the largest Wolf fetish measuring 5.50 inches in length.
This amazing and rare work by comes from my family's collection and has remained off the market since its original purchase in 1998.

- Large Golden Micaceous Pottery Bowl with Fire Clouds by Lonnie VigilBy Lonnie VigilLocated in Los Angeles, CALonnie Vigil (1949 -) Micaceous Bowl 1994 8 inches H. x 13 inches in Diameter This striking bowl is by renown master potter Lonnie Vigil of Nambe Pueblo. Made from hand coils of micaceous clay, the surface is then slipped with micaceous clay and traditionally pit fired. Micaceous clay is so rich in the mineral mica that the mica's tiny gold-colored flakes impart a softly glowing, subtly textured surface to the finished pottery. So it is not just the form, but the surface that is so stunning on this beautiful piece. The bowl was fired to a deep golden orange, with the surface patterned by fire clouds. These fire clouds are varied in coloration forming an exquisite pattern on the surface of the bowl. Lonnie Vigil is the recognized master and innovator of micaceous pottery...Category
