British Sailor's Woolwork of Royal Navy Ship at Sea

About the Item

British Sailor's Woolwork of Royal Navy Ship at Sea, Circa 1870 The sailor's woolwork or woolie depicts a port side view of the Royal Navy frigate under full sail and flying the White Ensign. The ship sails on a wavy sea depicted in bands of blue and white depicting waves. A smaller sailing ship can be found in the lower left of the picture. The ship is leaving land with a lighthouse depicted in the right middle ground atop a cliff with seagulls flying nearby. The whole picture has a theatrical curtain framing the top section of the woolie in red and fringed in yellow. Interestingly there are two textile pockets containing photographs of the sailor and his wife. The photograph of the lady is on card marked, Plowright 224/East India Road E.. A photographer, E. Plowright had a studio in Maidstone, Kent. All within a large maple frame. Dimensions: 23 1/3 inches high x 29 1/2 inches wide x 1 inch. Now with Museum UV Glass protection) (Ref: NY10445-nurr)
