British Sailor's Woolwork with Unusual Border and a Fine Chain Stitch

About the Item

British sailor's woolwork with unusual border, Chain stitch, Circa 1875 The unusually designed charming sailor's woolie depicts a starboard side view of a British two-masted ship entering a harbor with a fort flying a large Union Jack in an early chain stitch. The ship itself flies the red ensign from it stern as well a red banner and a Union Jack from the foremast. The border is most unusual with a framing band surrounding the wool with a series of roses on a cream ground. The composition and strong color make this a pretty special woolwork. Dimensions: Frame: 24 inches x 29 inches x 2 inches deep, Sight: 18 1/2 x 23 inches Framed with Museum UV Glass. Provenance: The Collection of Sally W. Rhodes, CA.
