Very Rare Large Victorian Hand Carved Salesman Sample Skiff Boat American C 1865
About the Item
Very rare large size salesman sample skiff boat, circa 1865; hand carved out of a single piece of wood (perhaps maple) with Victorian period black print stenciling to the side in increments of "five" inches (five inches to thirty-five inches); to scale, of an inch equaling a foot; so sample boat being 35"; representing a 35 foot boat. Probably sold with different interior options and arrangements.
In all original condition, this is a terrific piece of Americana, in super untouched surface and warm patina; shows tendon joins of bench to sides (see image) and sleek authentic bow to stern design. There are a number of age cracks to the rear of the bow; very sturdy and stable construction (see image). See close up image of beautiful surface which has the appropriate amount of craquelure to validate 150 plus years age and genesis.Comes with a custom made metal stand, specially designed for this boat; displays beautifully.
This mid 19th century folk art boat was likely used as a salesman's sample by an itinerant sales person who traveled up and down East Coast seaports promoting his wares, usually by seeking out merchants to take orders based on this scaled down miniature version, or by leaving it on display in a merchant's establishment to take orders from that merchant's customers.

- "Cat Boat" Mechanical Toy Penny Bank, American, circa 1968By Utexiqual ProductsLocated in Incline Village, NVIn near mint and all original condition this vintage mechanical bank appeals to both sailing enthusiasts and bank collectors; perhaps a collector of "cat" memorabelia as well. The theme depicts two sailors riding their boat in full sail. It is quite substantial in both size and weight. To operate, (with the lever pushed all the way in from the left); place a coin vertically above the left arm of the sailor in red; from the right; push the lever all the way in. The sail and Boom hits the sailor, knocking him over as the coin drops into the bank. The other sailor moves forward while manning the tiller. The bank is named "Cat Boat...Category
