Abstract Steel Floor Sculpture by Mayer Spivack, Circa 1980s
About the Item
We recently acquired a collection of mid to late 20th century sculptures by the Newton, Massachusetts artist, psychotherapist and inventor Mayer Spivack. A lifelong innovator and creative theorist, his art was always an expression of the many professional worlds and career paths he inhabited. He was an important part of the East Coast Assemblage Movement and much like his West Coast contemporary John Outerbridge, Spivack’s “found object” works were created from the material castoffs of America’s industrial and domestic past. He gleaned foundry forms and other curious patterns and scraps from New England’s vanishing shipyards, textile mills and the Boston neighborhoods, fabricating his works as shrines or altarpieces meant to engage the viewer with various narratives on the nature of existence.
This work, in welded steel with found objects rests upon an early 19th Century joist beam from a Boston area factory.
