About the Item

This is a framed drawing of four women wrestling by Lewis Smith. It is done in pencil, ink, and crayon on paper from a sketch pad. The paper has yellowed somewhat with age. The sketch pad was pierced through, so there is a small hole on the left edge, and also a small tear in the upper right corner. It is mounted in a green wooden frame with a sliver missing from the upper right. The sketch itself measures 11 3/4" wide by 8 3/4" high, and the frame is 14 3/4" by 11 3/4". It is from the last quarter of the 20th c. Inventory Code: LS227. Lewis Smith, who was a reclusive, eccentric artist from Ohio. He lived alone most of his life in a house in the woods, drawing and painting on paper, cardboard, and his walls, and passed away in 1998. The two themes of most of his work are trains (his father worked for a railroad) and lady wrestlers. These are part of a series of very detailed diners drawn on the backs of flattened cracker boxes in crayon, markers, and ballpoint pen. They are all about 10" by 17" (with slight variation). The edges of the boxes were cut unevenly, and the original crease lines of the boxes are visible. There is writing on the reverse side on some. Crackers were a big part of his diet, and he then recycled the boxes into art. He lived most of his life in the woods of Ohio, alone after the death of his mother. Lewis Smith passed away in 1998. His drawing, writing, and painting on recycled paper, cardboard, and the walls of his house and buildings reflects his preoccupation with muscular women boxers and wrestlers, trains, time, and money.
