About the Item

Antique Flemish painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a splendid interior scene with characters typical of the Dutch Golden Age and in particular of the work of Jan Vermeer. The Netherlands had become an economic, maritime and commercial power and a new bourgeois class of collectors commissioned works of art that exalted the wealth obtained, an ambient painting of great refinement and small dimensions. The protagonist of the composition is a doctor or an alchemist in his study, among scientific instruments and a globe, vials and books scattered over magnificent masterfully painted fabrics. As always, the light comes from an open window and radiates throughout the room creating a magnificent play of chiaroscuro. The black and white checkered floor follows the lines of perspective, accompanying the gaze toward the two characters in the background, probably the client's wife who is accompanying a client to her husband's studio. Frame from the end of the 19th century in plaster and sculpted and gilded wood, beautifully decorated. Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and recovery of color in some small spots (see photo). Overall in good state of preservation. Sight size H 67 x W 83 cm.
