Luyanda Zindela - “The first time I felt at home in this city was when.."
About the Item
Forming part of Luyanda Zindela’s ongoing series, Abangani bami / Izithombe zami (My friends / Images of me), these new works chronicle ordinary, intimate moments between the artist and his community of close friends. Through his labour- intensive, repetitive cross-hatching process of making, Zindela reflects on companionship as a means collective witnessing. Existing as human is an embodied, deliberate act of ‘mark-marking’: of marking one’s place in time, in the world and with others. By capturing the mundane – adding music to a friend’s playlist, discovering a shared interest, or communing to eat, chatter, laugh, consol and have serious conversations – Zindela reflects on what makes us human. “Humanity is rarely found in spectacle; it is often found in quiet moments with the people you care most about.” Zindela’s self-representation is both sentimentally personal and political, where Black kinship and being is captured as a form of resistance. “We are gradually refusing to present ourselves, our bodies and our lives as sites of endless violence.” Zindela insists, “I present myself and my black life as human, and for me, that humanity lies in the quotidian.
