Dutch painting, oil on canvas
inspired by an tile panel delft blue, circa 1880-Inspired on a Dutch antique Delft Blue tile tableau (composition of individual tiles), depicting a pair skating on ice, 1880-1920.
Who can think of a thing that is more Dutch than a Dutch couple skating? In the 19th C paintings of winter scenes were very popular, and hence copied and originated from the nostalgic longing for the glorious art of the Golden Age when Europa had to deal with the Little Ice Age. Not only the painters but also the potters in Delft choose these wintry scenes for their Delftware who copied paintings and prints that were their inspirational source.
How interesting to find a “reverse” piece of art: a painting of a Delftware tableau.
