Byzantine Silver-Gilted Filigree Bride's Earrings Arpalii, 19th Century Bulgaria

About

Authentic Pair of earrings ('arpalii) comes from its origin town Vidin in Bulgaria. Silver-gilt, in the form of a central rosette with applied beadwork, surrounded by a series of rod and bead elements all with pattern grainwork or granulation, twisted wirework. the rosette on (a) is set with a green glass stone, while the rosette on (b) has a blue glass stone. Pattern grainwork on reverse. The name for this type of earring, 'arpaliya', from a Turkish word meaning 'barley', so named because the design resembles little grains of barley. Probably from Vidin on the Danube in N.W. Bulgaria (information from donor). See also Eu1971,01.268, similar earrings from Vidin. They are a Byzantine form that goes back to the medieval period, see D. Drumev, 'Héritage Artistique Bulgare: Orfèvrerie', Sofia 1976, cat. 648, p. 530 and p. 642. For a closely similar pair of earrings described as from Vidin, see Maria Veleva and Snezhana Dancheva-Blagoeva, 'Bulgarian National Costumes and Folk Jewellery', Sofia 1983, pl. 8, p. 121 (ill.) and p. 132-3 (text), according to which 'arpalii' were widespread in northern Bulgaria in the 19th century and later in other parts of the country; they consisted of an openwork filigree rosette in the centre, surrounded by grains, like small barley grains. At some places, these earrings were passed through the ear lobe, but in Chiprovtsi and Berkovitsa they were tied with a thread which passed behind the ears. They were an obligatory jewel for every bride.
