Early 20th century hand-stitched and quilted American Amish Pieced Cotton Quilt in a” Sunshine and Shadows” pattern from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The prominent color in the quilt is green and brown with individual squares in various shades hand cut and hand stitched. The quilt has very fine hand stitching. The Amish community in Pennsylvania hand craft the quilts for their own use using the material that they had on hand. It is a beautiful example of an upcycling and reuse of material that has utilitarian functions but is also a representation of the art and culture that is woven into it. Hand pieced and embroidered African American crazy quilt circa the early 1900s. The quilt contains 25 blocks set 5x5, about 13" square mostly in rectangular and trapezoidal shapes of beautiful wool material in red, brown, gray, black, navy and pale green. Each piece is outlined with feather stitch embroidery and hand appliqued in place.The quilt contains a 5" wide gray flannel border. The backing of the quilt is made of gray cotton flannel. 19th and early 20th century African American quilts have become very collectable and extremely desirable.
