This extraordinary African American crazy quilt, hand-pieced and embroidered in the early 1900s, is a vivid expression of creativity, resilience, and cultural storytelling. Composed of 25 distinct blocks arranged in a 5x5 grid, each approximately 13 inches square, the quilt features an array of rich wool fabrics in hues of red, brown, gray, black, navy, and pale green—cut into dynamic rectangular and trapezoidal shapes.
Every piece is meticulously hand-appliquéd and accented with elegant feather stitch embroidery, lending intricate detail and texture to the overall composition. It has herringbone embroidered seams on a flannel cotton backing. The beautiful quilt was found in the New England region, possibly having been made in Pennsylvania in the late 19th century. The pieces have bright colors including brilliant red stars, gray, blue, and many others which results in a vibrant hand crafted piece of late 19th century art that can be used as a bed cover or wall art.
Crazy quilts: These quilts were made up of randomly sewn, abstract shapes, and were often embroidered with fancy stitches and motifs. The name "crazy" comes from the irregular shapes and sizes of the patches, which gave the quilt a broken pottery appearance. Crazy quilts were typically made with three layers, but were usually bound and tied to a backing instead of quilted. They were often used as decorative throws instead of bed coverings.

Beautiful vintage hand-stitched “pieced” silk quilt from Uzbekistan in Central Asia from the mid 1900s. The silk fabric pieces are cut in geometric form and some of them have the design on them. The vibrant colors are red, green, yellow, blue, brown, and black. The quilt resembles the design of the American "Crazy Quilts". The silk quilt would be an ideal piece as a table cover or wall art. The quilt was hand stitched of individual silk pieces in each frame. It is truly a labor of love and dedication. The hand stitched quilts from the 19th and the early 20th centuries have become extremely collectable. One reason is the delicate nature of such items. Because it is so delicate, it would be a wonderful piece to use as a wall art tapestry.
