Prancing Morgan Horse on a Hooked Hearth Rug, American Folk Art, 19th Century

About the Item

This hand-hooked hearth rug depicts a prancing black Morgan horse on a red field surrounded by gold stars, and outlined in black. The cotton and woollen rags are hooked onto an opened-up-burlap-bag foundation and backed by cotton tape around the rear edges. The rug is in excellent condition and clean, with minor evidence of age, such as slight curling at the narrow ends after it was stored rolled up, and light normal wear to the cotton edging at the corners. The rug is handmade and is in vibrant and great condition. This Folk Art rug has great eye appeal thanks to the swirling dark colors used in the body of the horse, the variegated red field filled will gold stars, and the skill and taste of the maker. It was done in the American tradition of re-using leftover materials to transform them into something new and useful and artistic. The Morgan horse is the state animal of Vermont and has a long history in this state of development and study at the Morgan Horse Farm of the University of Vermont in Burlington. The Morgan horse of the 19th century was used for carriages, riding, farm work, and military duty as a cavalry mount, especially during the Civil War. It is known for its ability to perform many tasks with a friendly attitude. It is a true American breed dating from the late 18th century and named after the breeder Justin Morgan of Randolph, Vermont, the owner of "Figure", the first sire.
