Rare Hand-Knotted War Rug Depicting Reign & King Amanullah Khan 1919 Afghanistan

About the Item

Hand knotted and superb condition, central Asian war rug with important year date and original resellers label. This rare and all hand-knotted, Afghan war rug is another one of our recent rare finds. Not too long ago the Memorial Art Gallery held an exhibition on these so called 'war rugs' and the rare specimen that we are offering you here would certainly have perfectly fit in with the unique and hand-knotted rugs that were exhibited there. We feel that this written announcement of that particular exhibition (that we found on the internet) will much better than we ever could explain the importance and historical significance of these rugs: "This exhibition brings to the United States, for the first time, examples from distinguished private collections of Afghan war rugs. The artists who wove them, mostly women, abandoned their traditional nonfigurative styles to produce rich pictorial images that recount a more current cultural story. Maps, weapons, army tanks, and portraits of kings, khans, and military leaders are among the new motifs that began appearing in otherwise traditional carpets in the 1970s and proliferated after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and again following the post-September 11 intervention by the United States. The 42 rugs in the show are selected for their exceptional quality, rarity, and content. They can be enjoyed as both avant-garde textiles and as decorative works reflecting the modernization of tradition over 1,000 years old. The wealth of associations these rugs have with history, politics, culture, religion, and the increasing globalization of world trade offer myriad possibilities for interpretation. They represent an encounter of a timeless aesthetic tradition with the violent reality of contemporary central Asia." This particular rug depicts a very important reign in the history of Afghanistan, Amanullah Khan. The yeardate of 1919 is extra important, because he then became reign of Afghanistan and later King, but in 1919 Afghanistan also won the war with British India. We believe that for that reason Amanullah Khan here also is depicted with many honorary/war medals. We have never seen a war rug which so specifically 'mentions' the yeardate 1919 and we are certain that there are more important symbols (for that era) in this rug that we (Westerners) don't recognize and/or understand the meaning of. As the original label states, this rug was hand-knotted in Belutschistan. This is located in the Southern three provinces of Afghanistan. If you are as enthousiastic about and as interested in this unique war rug as we are then maybe you should be its next custodian. Mind you, our fair price for this great value rug even includes perfect packing and also free worlwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width: 52 x 32 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish and artistic and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again).

  • Antique, Rare & Decorative Pair of Hand Carved and Hand Painted Horse Sculptures
    Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning and unique pair of matching horse sculptures. With a combined experience of almost 30 years in the antiques trade, we were thrilled to once again find beautifully hand-crafted and decorative antiques that we had never seen before. From the density and the weight we can see and feel that these highly decorative horse sculptures are made of a tropical hardwood. Like, for example, with antique mirror frames or church sculptures these horses too were first covered with a mixture of chalk and glue so that the paint would hold longer. And, as so often is the case with antiques, the colors that were used for painting these horses are so much more beautiful than anything you find in this day and age that they truly are an absolute joy to look at. From the colors, the wear, the materials and the techniques that were used to create these horses we can see that these are 19th century antiques. However and unfortunately we lack the knowledge to be able to tell you from which country these highly decorative and sizeable works of art originate. We just can't find matching style horse sculptures anywhere on the worldwide web. They could be Chinese or Nepalese, but they could also be Persian or Arabian. We just have not been able to find out. What we do know is that they are definitely antique, they are in beautiful condition (with some wear, consistent with their age), they are highly decorative, probably unique and they have a look and feel that will instantly change the atmosphere of the room they are in. Mind you, our sharp price for this wonderful pair of horse sculptures...
