"Flying Santa" Clockwork Toy/Ornament by Guntherman, Germany, circa 1905, Rare

Extremely rare example of a turn of the century German tin toy, not found in any reference books, but almost definitely of Guntherman manufacture, circa 1900-1910. The Guntherman toy company was founded in 1826 and was located in Nuremberg, Germany They were well respected in the toy industry, and manufactured high quality toys for over a century. Their toys are very sought after today by discerning collectors worlwide. "Flying Santa" is in all original paint and is complete; including the mechanism. I have seen it only twice in the last 30 years, and one time it lacked the mechanism entirely and was listed as a Christmas ornament. That particular example brought close to $1700 in auction on June 2, 2007. My example works well and the clockwork mechanism is original. The cardboard propellers are replaced as they would be after 100 years. Not much is known about this rare toy, but some speculate that it might have been a Christmas ornament because of the hanging capability from the hook on the green pack of Santa. The tree is probably a later replacement ,as the previous two examples I have seen both had different trees, and this example is different also. The toy is handmade and the tin is is in original hand painted realistic colors; Santa is painted red with white trim; he carries a green sack; flesh tones to his face and hands, and black boots complete the color scheme. Most of the original paint is extant and all original with no touch up. Dimensions: 7" high x 6" wide (with tree) x 2 1/2" deep 4" wide (without tree) I have provided a customized metal stand (which is included) to display the Santa, since the only other way to display the toy would be to hang it (perhaps from a Christmas tree). I have not seen this toy in any catalogues but I would suspect it would have been advertised as a Belsnickel.
