About the Item

African Statue 'Boli' Bambara Mali C1950 Zoomorphic altar statuette (Boli). Kono tribe. Provenance: Swedish private collection, inherited with the Familly. Sacred object reserved for initiates intended to maintain religious and political control over society The Boli is an abstract figure which is kept in the chapel of the Kono secret society of the Bambara.. Mali. West Africa. Second half S.XX. This object plays an essential role in the spiritual life of the Bamana. They believe in the materialization of the spiritual powers of society. The basic shape looks like a very simplified cow. It consists of a wooden core overmolded with clay, eggs, cola nuts, blood, urine, honey, vegetable fiber and cow manure. The use of blood, excrement and urine reflect the belief that these organic substances possess extremely powerful spiritual powers.
