Vintage Handspun Cotton Ikat, Uncut Warp, Lembata, Indonesia, Mid-20th Century

About
Vintage handspun cotton Ikat. Uncut warp. Lembata, Indonesia. mid-20th century.
This sarong comprises two panels, each woven on a traditional backstrap loom and then sewn together. It was never worn, but was given as part of a wedding gift exchange, presented by the wife's family to the family of the groom. Because of its importance in this ceremonial exchange, it was made in the traditional way, woven using only hand spun cotton thread and colored using only natural dyes. This was in keeping with the ways of the ancestors, that they might look favourably on the union.
The rusts, blues, purplish blacks, tans and off whites are typical for textiles from Lembata.
Condition: very good.
Dimensions: 55.5 inches long by 25.5 inches wide.
