About the Item

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter, etcher and illustrator. He is regarded as the most significant Dutch master of the 17th century and one of the best painters and etchers in all of European art. About three hundred paintings, three hundred etchings, and two thousand sketches were created by him in total. His work belongs to the Baroque period and is visibly influenced by Caravaggism, although he never visited Italy. His extraordinary skill in manipulating light and dark, frequently employing stark contrasts (chiaroscuro) to draw in the viewer, resulted in dramatic scenes with clear details. Exemplifying Dutch design aesthetics, the petite Rembrandt 366 single-tier chandelier illuminates with six gracefully arching brass arms. At just 45cm high and 50cm wide, this striking yet refined fixture maintains an approachable old world elegance. Intricate scrolling metalwork borders the circular frame, reflecting ornate 17th century embellishments in a smaller scale. Though modeled after an antique, this elegant chandelier is modernly wired for use today. With its decadent glow and masterful detailing, the Rembrandt 366 brings a touch of Golden Age grandeur to living spaces. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric wires run subtly along the arms, as they are made out of solid brass. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly placed. Brink & van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink & van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
