Antique 19th C Renaissance Style Brass Electric Two Tier 12 Light Chandelier

About the Item

This impressive two-tier chandelier was made in France in the late 19th century. The piece is completely made in brass and it is heavily decorated with many classic Renaissance ornaments such as scrolls and acanthus leaves. The brass ornaments were partially cast and partially ajour cut. The whole piece was polished to a deep gloss. The chandelier has a compact shape with two stories of each six arms. The chandelier is now wired for electricity with E14 fixtures. Originally it was a gas chandelier made for city gas. The 19th century saw the advent of a new source of energy and lighting produced from the distillation of coal: town gas, also known as manufactured gas. This invention provided heat and light and was an integral feature of an innovative century. In the mid 19th century all medium-sized and major cities in France had their gasworks and public distribution networks. Until the First World War, the gas lamp remained the most popular source for lighting. After the war, the incandescent lamp would continue to gain ground. However, this was a gradual process, so the gas lamp remained a normal phenomenon until the Second World War. During the Second World War, the supply of fuel through pipes in Western Europe largely came to a standstill. As a result, after the war, people had to start all over again with setting up things like mains networks, lighting, and heating. This led to the large abolition of gas as a fuel for lighting. With this, it was also done with the gas lamp as lighting for the home. The chandelier was converted to electric fixtures in our atelier and it is wired for US electricity. The chandelier is clean, without defects, solid, and ready for use.
