Barovier et Toso Attributed, 14 Pulegoso Leaves Reticello Bowl, 1940s, Murano

About the Item

Sculptural chandelier with a unique combination of reticello and Pulegoso finis. The reticello bowl what indicates the decade. It's made by overlapping two filigree bowls spiralizer in opposite directions. Before Carlo Scarpa and Dino Martens works in the 1940s, reticello was made without bubbles in the middle of each square of clear glass resulting by the nesting. It's simply because it was considered a flaw to see the bubbles. On the next decade, the overlapping was done on the Piera as the bubble trapped by the canes was then considered a plus. The 14 leaves have a central striped clear stem and the feathers are made in Pulegoso. My friend Sergio Rossi, master of Murano, when he saw the picture said "the times when Pulegoso was made in the Crucible". Full batch of Pulegoso was made by Barovier for the lighting and Venini or Seguso for accessories. The Pulegoso finish, from puleghe (chips, the chemical dust that is added to create an infinitive number of bubbles inside the glass mass) is a signature of the Barovier chandelier. Reticello has white filigree canes and makes a wonderful play with the three bulbs inside the bowl. The Pulegoso crown of leaves pick the light to contour the bowl masterpiece. A masterpiece that would highlight with an historical chandelier a very special place. Hardware shows typical construction of pre WW2, with wood arm holder (after WW2 is in metal) and carries three regular bulbs (for US the sockets will be changed). This is an incredible unique chandelier that can be considered a milestone of glass-making history. Today just a few maestro can make a bowl in reticello without bubbles of this size. Bowl measures 38 cm /15" diameter.
