A beautiful glass chandelier from Italy c.1920

About the Item

A beautiful hand blown glass chandelier from the island of Murano near Venice, Italy c.1920. Please notice the incomparable ability of the artisans who created this functional piece of lighting using the most impractical material of all, namely hand blown glass. This chandelier possesses a pleasing combination of the glass maker's art where colour and texture are combined to create a unique display of the reflective and refractive qualities of glass. The colours seen here are eighteenth century in origin and reflect the extraordinary extravagance of Venetian interiors as entire rooms were painted in brilliant colours to create a total experience. Each of the six arms has a scroll shape and has a ribbon twist pattern along with a change in scale. The arms begin with a slender shape near the centre and expends in circumference as they reach the farthest point away from the centre. The bobeche (the disk designed to trap any dripping wax) is clear glass and is able to be totally removed for ease of cleaning. Interestingly the six arms are spaced equally around the perimetre but three of the arms are set lower than the upper three in order to create a sense of movement around the entire chandelier. Please notice the lovely decorative addition of hand blown glass chains that drape between the arms where they sway from beautifully forms rings suspended from each arm. The clear glass centre cylinder of the chandelier is affixed with hand applied ribbons of yellow and blue as well as flower blossoms formed of individual pieces of coloured glass at the base as well as tips and medallions at the top. The wide circular base of the fixture is where the magic happens as each of the separate glass stems stand in a predetermined spot as they are able to be removed for safe transport. As each stem was individually created they vary in height and appearance with each having a particular beauty and balance as their placement was designed to mimic a bouquet of flowers. Please imagine being back in the eighteenth century when all chandeliers were illuminated with candlelight and it becomes easy to see why these fixtures were such an important part of the interior decoration of a room. The sparkle of the glass was reminiscent of the movement of light on the waters of the Venetian lagoon. When the sun shone brightly the colours had a brilliance that was dazzling and even on a dreary winter day the different hues of the glass brought beauty into a dim interior. This charming chandelier is perfectly sized for an intimate room where its beauty may be admired and enjoyed on a daily basis.
